Grandpa's Choice Heirloom Apple Orchard

Malus domestica 'Assorted Heirloom Collections'

Grandpa always loved testing something new. There are thousands of named varieties in the world, so one could go on and on learning about new varieties.

When you go into the produce department, there are only a handful of apple varieties on the shelf. You rarely, if ever, see an heirloom variety. But, there are many who swear that many of the old heirloom varieties are just as good, if not better, than the ones in the grocery store. Sometimes, you will find them at farmer's markets and fruit stands, so that is often the best palce to start to discover the excitement of heirloom varieties.

Grandpa has been offering some of the most popular heirloom varieties at Grandpa's Orchard for a several years, but he is now starting to propagate more and expand his collection of old original strains, common heirloom varieties, and many of the old exotic heirloom varieties which are hard to come by. As time goes on, he will start listing these individually on Grandpa's Orchard, but at this time there are too many varieties and too few trees.

For the backyard fruit grower who is truly adventurous, Grandpa will offer assortments of heirloom apples on dwarf and semi-dwarf roots. Each will be labeled with its variety tag, but you may have to do some research to learn more about each variety until Grandpa can get all the information on-line at Grandpa's Orchard. Some may be common heirlooms we offer, but some will be truly strange, exotic and unique.

Our choice of varieties, but you tell us the rootstocks you would like.

Plant and care for them, and in a few years, you will start being pleasantly surprized by the different apples that they will provide.

Bon Voyage! You are about to embark on a trip of discovery!

Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

Since we can't predict which varieties you may be getting, treat all of them with great care. Some may be more scab and disease resistant than others, but for the first few years maintain and grow them carefully until you know for sure.

A Little History

Johnny Appleseed is always given the distinction of spreading the apple throughout the United States. But most of what he distributed were seedlings from seeds collected at cider mills and elsewhere. So, often every apple was different. However, many people would find that they liked a particular seedling apple and would give it a name and propagate it for their friends and family. Thus, many of the old heirloom varieties we now have started. Many heirloooms also came with the original settlers in North America from Europe, and often they developed many "sports" or different strains, so there seem to be lots of "pippin" type apples as well as others. Sometimes, the names were forgotten when settlers migrated west and took their favorite strains with them, so sometimes an heirloom apple may have several different names.
