Why "redder" isn't always "better".
Grandpa often bucks this trend seen in the produce department.

Small soap bars to deter deer

Z-Deer deterring soap

Grandpa used to be able to find these little soap bars in all the motels he stayed in, and wondered if their fragrant smell would have any effect on the deer that often ravaged newly planted trees. Surprisingly enough, they did! However, he found that they are not fool proof. It was only one of the tricks that he learned, among many, that he used to use to help control "critter" damage.

Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

Drill a hole through the little soap bar and use a twist tie or string to tie them to young trees. Use at least one per tree, but if you have a lot of deer pressure, you may want to use several. Some people unwrap them so they smell more, while others leave the wrappers on. Unwrapped ones will not last as long as wrapped ones. Be careful to not let the twist tie or string girdle the limb or trunk that it is tied to.

A Little History

"Cashmere Bouquet"(R) is the one that Grandpa often used, because it is readily available in the orchard supply stores by the case. That's why we offer it. Other soaps may work just as well. We've heard that "Irish Spring"(R) is another good one, but we haven't seen it in little bars. Deer don't like the smell of humans, so anything that makes them think humans are present helps deter them.
