Damson Plum

Damson Plum

Prunus domestica 'Damson'

The Damson plum has a tart, juicy golden yellow flesh with bluish-purple skin. The self-fertile, vigorous tree crops heavy and ripens from August to early September. Damson is a great little plum for jelly, but if you like plums with "pucker factor", you can eat them fresh too.

Prunus domestica 'Damson'
Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips

Damson is very hardy and we've never seen them fail to set a crop. They are completely self-fertile and a good pollen source for other European plums. Expect the limbs to be roped up with plums. Thinning doesn't appear to help them gain much size, since they often are only an inch or less in diameter.

A Little History about Damson Plum

Grandpa always planted some Damson plums in with his Stanley prunes, mostly to help pollinate, we think, but he always made money on them when he took them to market. He didn't like picking them, though, because they are small and it takes a while to pick a bushel, which probably weighs about 60 pounds! We don't think he liked picking them up, either!
