Homeowner Growing and Maintenance TipsGrandpa's Choice™ Red Delicious is a non-spur tree with a lot of vigor. It can be susceptible to fire-blight if "pushed" too hard, so don't over-fertilize or over-trim to get too lush growth. Pollinate Red Delicious with almost any other apple, since it blooms right in the middle of the bloom season. For best size, thin to just "king" bloom--- the first bloom to open in the season.

A Little HistoryThe original Delicious apple was discovered as a seedling in Peru, Iowa in the late 1800;s and made famous worldwide because of its wonderful, sweet flavor. Grandpa grew some of the original Delicious on the farm, but always bemoaned the fact that people were introducing reddder and redder strains, which seemed to have less and less of the original flavor. Now, it seems that people identify the redder strain's flavor as more "delicious" than it ever was.
